My Experience with a Contact Nipple Shield

There is a lot of mixed opinions about the use of nipple shields. Some are against them, some say the negatively effect your supply, and some say they are a life saver. I am in the life saver camp. 

What is a nipple shield? A nipple shield is a soft flexible silicone nipple that is worn over the mother's nipple while nursing the baby. 

When Bunny was born she immediately nursed. When we were in the hospital, the Lactation Consultant said Bunny's latch was good and she was doing well. We were discharged from the hospital and went to the well baby check the next day. Bunny was loosing weight. Too much weight. The Lactation Consultant decided to investigate Bunny's latch and mouth to see what was going on. When Bunny was 3 days old we discovered she had a tongue tie. We were able to clip her tongue tie that day, but the ENT didn't clip it as far as we would have liked. Because of that, Bunny and I started using a nipple shield. Tongue-tie (ankyloglossia) is a condition that restricts the tongue's range of motion. With tongue-tie, an unusually short, thick or tight band of tissue (lingual frenulum) tethers the bottom of the tongue's tip to the floor of the mouth. A person who has tongue-tie might have difficulty sticking out his or her tongue. Tongue-tie can also affect the way a child eats, speaks and swallows, as well as interfere with breast-feeding.

The nipple shield was supposed to be a short term solution. We saw a Lactation Consultant every few days. Bunny wasn't able to latch without the nipple shield. The Lactation Consultant said Bunny had a small pallet (mouth) and still had a minor tongue tie. Because of these two issues, Bunny still needed the nipple shield to sustain her latch. Bunny was able to latch without the nipple shield, but because of her high pallet and her tongue tie, it was too much work and she could only nurse for a few seconds. The nipple shield allowed Bunny to continue nursing. 

When Bunny was 10 months old and still not able to nurse without the nipple shield, I saw another Lactation Consultant and asker her if she thought Bunny had a lip tie. This Lactation Consultant agreed with me that Bunny did in fact have a lip tie. Inside your mouth, there is a small fold of tissue which runs between your upper lip and gum (you can feel it with your tongue). This is called the maxillary labial frenulum (or frenum). Most people have no significant frenulum attachment, but sometimes this frenulum attaches further down the gum, or runs between the front teeth and attaches behind them, causing restricted movement of the upper lip. It's similar to tongue tie, but involving the upper lip and gum instead. Often times the lip tie will effect the positioning of the upper teeth, causing a gap. 

Tongue ties often occur in conjunction with lip ties. I was very sad and disappointed that the first Lactation Consultant missed the lip tie when Bunny was 3 days old. Because Bunny was 10 months old when the lip tie was noticed, the procedure to correct her lip tie would involve her being put under anesthesia. Neither I nor My Love were comfortable with Bunny having the procedure done. We decided to wait until Bunny was older to have her lip tie corrected. The procedure would still be unpleasant, but at least she would be old enough to somewhat understand what was happening and why. Luckily, when Bunny was 14 months old, she fell and split her lip tie by herself. I wish the first Lactation Consultant caught the lip tie when she saw the tongue tie. 

When using the nipple shield correctly, there should be no supply issue. There are those who are concerned about your supply dropping if you use a nipple shield. The contact nipple shield allows the baby to touch the breast, which helps your milk supply to increase in the early days and weeks, and helps your milk supply to be maintained in the later months. 

In my experience, using the nipple shield did not decrease my milk supply. I would make sure the nipple shield was on correctly, that there was good milk transfer (I could see milk inside the nipple shield), and that my breasts were soft after Bunny nursed. You do need to make sure your baby's latch is correct when using a nipple shield. It is a tool to help, not a replacement for good positioning and latch.

Using the nipple shield was very frustrating for me in the beginning. I was frustrated that I could not nurse without it. I was frustrated when it fell off. I was frustrated that I had to use the nipple shield to nurse Bunny. I was frustrated that I had to take the nipple shield with me everywhere I went. 

I was frustrated that I wasn't actually nursing my baby. That I needed this piece of plastic to do something that was supposed to be so natural. It took me a long time to get over this feeling. I hated nursing Bunny in public because I was afraid someone would see the nipple shield. I was afraid I would be looked down upon. Eventually I stopped caring what other people thought. I was nursing my baby. I was fighting every single day to make the best choice I could for Bunny. I hated the nipple shield, but at the same time I loved it. I loved that the nipple shield was able to allow Bunny and I to nurse. To this day, we still use the nipple shield. 

Bunny is now 18 months old. We still use the nipple shield. Bunny is able to nurse without it and sometimes does. I think it is more of a comfort object for her now. Using the nipple shield is normal to Bunny, she doesn't need it but I am glad it was (and is) there when we needed (need) it. 

I did end up buying 2 nipple shields so I could always have a clean one. I would use one, clean it and let it dry, and while it was drying I would use the second one. This was also helpful for the middle of the night when I would loose the nipple shield in the dark. 

If you are using a nipple shield, please know that it can be a long term solution. If there are circumstances where using a nipple shield makes your nursing relationship better, or even possible, embrace the nipple shield! Be thankful we have this wonderful technology. It took me a long time to do that, but once I did, I was much happier.

I know I have been posting about breastfeeding/nursing products a lot recently. That is because, for the first year of Bunny's life, MY life has revolved around breastfeeding. Bunny is now 16 months old and we have not weaned yet. But I am finally feeling like breastfeeding doesn't rule my world and schedule. (Not that I minded when it did rule my world and schedule. I did not mind one bit!) Bunny is only nursing to fall asleep now. Which means I can FINALLY wear any shirt I want to! I don't have to wear a nursing shirt anymore! My wardrobe is (almost) back to normal! It is crazy to think I can wear just about any shirt in my closet now! I don't have to worry about exposing my stomach or too much breast.  The world is my oyster! Or my closet is. It feels so nice to be able to wear all of my clothes again!

I first tried the TendHer pillows at room temperature. When I put them on, I noticed they were cool. You can use TendHer pillows without the pillowcases when using them at room temperature. TendHer pillows are great for providing a cooling sensation while protecting your skin from touching fabric. There is no suggested time limit when using TendHer at room temperature. Keep them on your breasts as long as you desire!

Putting something cold on your breast can help with engorgement. Cold helps to decrease inflammation. With the TendHer nursing pillows, you can put the pillows in the refrigerator or freezer for a minimum of 30 minutes before using them. Once they are cool enough, insert the pillows into the pillow cases and wear them in your bra with the red stretchy fabric against your body. It is suggested to wear them for up to 20 minutes. The TendHer pillows get cold, but not too cold. They have found the prefect level of coldness for your breasts. I used the TendHer pillows cold and put them in my bra to soothe my tender nipples. The coolness lasted for the full 20 minutes when I wore my TendHer pillows. I must admit, I have worn TendHer pillows cold on hot days just to cool myself down. You can use TendHer cold whenever you would like a cooling sensation. But always use the pillowcases!

Using heat when nursing is great for triggering a letdown. I would take a warm shower before I nursed or I used a hot rice bag. The rice bag would get WAY too hot. I couldn't use it for very long. TendHer nursing pillows are the perfect temperature when heated! You heat TendHer pillows just like you would heat breast milk. To heat TendHer pillows, you immerse them in a bowl of warm water for about 5 minutes. The water should not be hotter than what you would comfortably bathe in.  After 5 minutes, take the TendHer pillows out, pat them dry, and place them in their pillowcases. Then wear them in your bra with the stretchy red fabric against your skin. The recommended time to wear TendHer warm is 10-20 minutes. When I wore the TendHer pillows, they were very warm but not too warm. I was able to feel the heat for about 15 minutes. The heat was not so intense that it burned me or I felt the need to remove the pillows. I would use TendHer pillows warm when I want to soothe sore nipples, increase milk flow or letdown, or just for comfort.

To clean TendHer pillows, simply wash them in warm soapy water and pat dry or allow to air dry. TendHer pillow cases are machine washable, or you can wash them by hand. It is recommended to air dry the pillow cases. 

TendHer pillows are very comfortable and soothing. When I was wearing TendHer pillows, I forgot they were even there. I used heat before almost every nursing session in those first few weeks. TendHer nursing pillows would have been so much better than my rice bags!

Milkies Milk Saver Review And Giveaway

When I was pregnant with Bunny I saw Milkies Milk Saver in the store. I thought it looked weird and uncomfortable and I did not think it really had a valuable purpose. Because, really, nobody could possibly leak THAT much! Oh what little I knew!

Once Bunny was born and we started nursing, one side per feeding, I realized how wrong I had been! I ordered Milkies Milk Saver immediately! They couldn't get to me fast enough! When my Milkies Milk Saver arrived, I still thought it looked big and uncomfortable. I was pleasantly surprised when I used it! Milkies Milk Saver is VERY comfortable! I thought for sure having something pushing on my engorged breast would feel very uncomfortable, but Milkies Milk Saver does not push on your breast. It sits gently in your bra, against your breast. If you wear a tighter bra, it will definitely push more against your breast, but in the very beginning, I was only wearing sleep bras.

I used Milkies Milk Saver when I would nurse Bunny, and when I would pump. In the very beginning I had a single pump that only pumped one side at a time. If I did not use the Milkies Milk Saver, I would soak through my nursing pads. I could collect about an ounce or so of milk from the side that was not being used! If you have supply issues or are having a hard time keeping up with your baby's intake, an ounce is a massive amount to waste in your nursing pad!

Using Milkies Milk Saver is very easy. You simply set Milkies Milk Saver in your bra with your nipple in the hole and nurse or pump on the other side! Milkies Milk Saver can comfortably hold 2 ounces of breast milk before you need to empty it. It is easy to switch from one side to the other side without spilling any milk. The only time I ever spilled any milk is when I forgot I had the Milkies Milk Saver on (it is that comfortable!) and I bent over. Out spilled all the milk! Oops! I have heard some women say they wear it all day long when they are out and about, but due to the spilling issue, I do not see that working very well.

Milkies Milk Saver is very easy to clean. You can hand wash it with warm water and soap. It air dries fairly quickly, or you can use a towel to dry it off.


Milkies comes in a protective case that is great for storing your Milkies in when not in use. The case is a hard material to keep Milkies protected. The case also doubles as a stand. You can set Milkies in the case upright with milk inside. This is very helpful when you have a squirmy baby in your arms, when you need to put yourself back together after nursing, or when you need to grab a container to pour the milk into.

I absolutely LOVE this product! I used it multiple times a day for about a year. I am finally at the point where I do not leak every time I nurse. For those early days when I was leaking up a storm, this was a wonderful way to collect breast milk, and keep me from making a mess.

Extended Breastfeeding - What it looks like for us

Bunny is 15 months old. She nurses five to eight times a day. We (I) have no intention of weaning anytime soon. Before I had Bunny, I thought we would nurse up to a year then stop. I thought, once she is old enough to run around, has more than 4 teeth in her mouth, and can ask for milk, surely she is old enough to not need it! Now that I am her Mom, I do not see why those things matter! I couldn't imagine waking up on her first birthday and not nursing her anymore. Bunny loves to nurse, and I love it to. Yes, you read the right, I LOVE to nurse my baby. When our nursing relationship ends, I will be the sad one, not Bunny. I love the comfort nursing provides. I love the ease of it. (It was not easy in the beginning!) I love knowing my body is doing exactly what it is made to do. My breasts have a purpose, a real purpose, to feed my sweet child. 

I always wondered what nursing a toddler would look like, so in case you are wondering the same, I will give you a small glimpse into our world.

Bunny wakes up in the morning and the first thing she does is nurse. Bunny sits up in her bed and cries for me, I lay down next to her and she closes her little eyes and nurses. I love this time in the morning. I feel it gives Bunny a chance to wake up slowly. She often closes her eyes for a few more minutes, then stretches and waves "Hi" to me. When she's done nursing we like to lay in bed and laugh for no reason at all! What a way to wake up! 

Bunny plays all morning, eats breakfast, snacks, and lunch. When it is time for nap, Bunny and I lay down in bed to nurse to sleep. I watch a movie or a t.v. show on my iPad while Bunny nurses to sleep. 

When Bunny wakes up from nap, she likes to nurse. It used to be that Bunny would nurse before getting up from nap, but recently Bunny has wanted to play for 5-10 minutes before she nurses. I think this nursing session might be gone before too long. I cherish it every day, knowing one day it might be the last day she nurses after nap.

After nap Bunny has a snack, and plays some more. Bunny doesn't often nurse again until bedtime. There are days she wants to nurse again between nap and bedtime, but it is not often, and she does not nurse for long. 

When it is time for bed, Bunny nurses to sleep again. This time I lay quietly with her, with no iPad. I love to watch her fall asleep. She is so peaceful and so calm. She looks like my little baby when she is nursing to sleep. I love how she cuddles up to me and shares that special time with me. 

Bunny wakes up two to three times a night to nurse. She doesn't nurse for long, but she is definitely nursing. When she is done nursing, she rolls over and is back asleep. In fact, as soon as she is latched on, she is back asleep. 

This may not be what your toddler does, every toddler is different. I love it and wouldn't trade it for the world. I love that when Bunny wakes up in the middle of the night, all it takes is a little milk for her to go back to sleep. 

Bunny is a VERY active toddler. She rarely ever sits still. Unless she is nursing. I love being able to cuddle and connect with her while we nurse. 

When Bunny learned how to sign milk, my heart melted. Now, Bunny can say milk and she rarely ever signs it. If I had done what I thought I would, stop nursing when my baby could ask for it, I would have stopped when Bunny was 10 months old! 

I am very glad I am able to nurse, and that it comes with no complications now. I have many friends who are not as lucky as I am. I also have many friends who are DONE with nursing when their babies turn a year old. That is a okay! Every baby and mom relationship is different. One is not better than the other. We are all mothers, trying to do our best! 

Luckily I have not received any criticism because I am still breastfeeding Bunny. If you are not as luck, here is some advice from Dr. Sears.

Co Sleeping and Why we do it

Before I had Bunny, and when I was pregnant with her, I was adamant we would NOT co sleep! What is co sleeping? Co sleeping is when you sleep in close proximity to your infant or child. When you sleep in the same bed as your infant or child, it is often called bed sharing instead of co sleeping. I told My Love that would NEVER happen to us! Babies don't belong in the bed with us! That is our special place, our safe haven from the world where we can talk and laugh and be alone. I would never be the mom that co slept! EVER!

Then Bunny was born. Three weeks early. She was breech, my water broke at 37 weeks exactly, and Bunny was born via a non emergent, non planned c-section. Because she was born early I felt I needed to recreate the womb as much as I possibly could. I held her skin to skin as much as I could. Even at  night. Bunny slept on my or My Love's chest for the first 6 weeks of her life. My Love and I slept in our bed, so Bunny slept in our bed, on our chests. I did what I said I would never do, co sleep. I couldn't imagine putting Bunny in her own room, much less her own bed in her own room! When Bunny was about 6 weeks old, she started sleeping on our bed instead of on our chest. We have a king size bed so there was enough space. It was magical for night feedings! When Bunny woke up to nurse, I would change her diaper then lay down and nurse her back to sleep. I would fall asleep with her. I got so much rest! I didn't have to get up and go into another room, didn't have to sit up, awake, while she nursed! I could fall asleep with her. It was wonderful!

We peacefully co slept until Bunny was five months old. At around five months, Bunny started moving in her sleep more. Because she was moving so much, we needed her to have her own space. We decided to use a crib side car style. It is an extension of your bed. It worked out wonderfully! We still have the crib next to our bed and everyone gets a decent nights sleep!

There are a few "safety" concerns, soft objects blocking baby's airway, baby not being able to roll over or move his/her face out of the mattress, mom or dad rolling on baby in the middle of the night. We addressed those by not having a comforter on our bed, only using a light blanket, Bunny wasn't allowed to sleep on her tummy at night until she learned to roll over by herself, My Love and I never take any medication that impairs our thinking or motor skills or drink alcohol. When you are sleeping with your baby, you are hyper aware of them and their every move. I could feel Bunny breathing all night long. I was NEVER in danger of rolling on her or suffocating her. In fact, when we moved her to the crib that is side car style next to our bed, I did not sleep well for the first few nights. I was so used to feeling her next to me, feeling her breathing, it was odd not to be able to know she was breathing without staring at her in the dark.

MommyCon San Francisco!!

My Love, Bunny and I were so excited to attend the MommyCon in San Francisco! MommyCon is a convention dedicated to bringing mothers to be and modern parents together, along with brands and ideas that focus on the shared ideals. The focus is on natural parenting methods and timeless tidbits as we journey through parenthood together. 

MommyCon had many vendors and booths, they were very informative and helpful. There were car seat specialists, slings, wraps and soft structured carriers, all there to answer questions and help you find the best product to fit your needs. It was wonderful to see so many babywearing moms! Everywhere I looked there was a happy baby attached to a person! Moms and Dads alike! There were nursing moms everywhere, not using covers and NOBODY cared! There was a nursing room for those who wanted to use it. There were seminars about amber teething necklaces, breastfeeding support, baby wearing, cloth diapering, car seat safety and more! The environment was very warm and friendly. I wish I could attend a MommyCon every weekend! I was happy to see some brands I already knew about, and thrilled to see some new brands and products I had never seen or heard before! I am so excited to try some of the new products! Alanis Morissette spoke at MommyCon but I sadly wasn't able to hear her. Bunny was tired, too tired to stay.

My Favorite Nursing Pillow Ever! Luna Lullaby Bosom Baby Nursing Pillow Review and Giveaway

I have tried many nursing pillows. The ever so popular boppy, my breast friend, jj cole nursing pillow, san diego bebe nursing pillow, and the luna lullaby Bosom Baby pillow. My favorite pillow BY FAR is the luna lullaby Bosom Baby pillow. It is oh so soft, nice and fluffy, and easy to manipulate. 

I had an unexpected c-section. I brought my boppy with me to the hospital only to realize it was extremely uncomfortable on my incision! I ended up tossing it in the corner and using regular pillows to help support my new baby. When I got home I tried my breast friend only to find that it too touched and pushed on my incision. I then tried the san diego bebe nursing pillow, and that was better on my incision, but it was ginormous and hard to move around. I couldn't get comfortable with it. 
These were the three pillows I had before I gave birth, and none of them worked. So my search  for the best nursing pillow began. That is when I tried the jj cole nursing pillow. That was better on my incision, but was very firm and not easy to use. I couldn't get Bunny at the right height with this pillow. She was either too low or too high, the pillow was too firm, I could not adjust it. It was a one size fits all kind of pillow. 

Finally, when Bunny was about 8 weeks old, my luna lullaby Bosom Baby pillow came!

Hallelujah! I was taken aback by its size. It was huge! I thought for sure this nursing pillow was going to be a disaster, just like all the pillows before it. I was pleasantly surprised when this pillow was EXTREMELY comfortable. I was comfortable and so was Bunny. She fell asleep nursing, which wasn't rare. What WAS rare was, I could move her (and the pillow) and she STAYED ASLEEP! Up until this point Bunny would only sleep on me or My Love (or anyone else who happened to be holding her).

More about the luna lullaby Bosom Baby nursing pillow. It is a boomerang shape, unlike most other nursing pillows. This shape allows you to move the nursing pillow to the spot where it will give you the most support. You are not stuck using it in one position. The luna lullaby pillow is soft yet firm at the same time. The softness allows you to maneuver it however you would like, but it is still firm enough to keep its shape and to support your baby while you nurse. You can adjust the pillow to accommodate different nursing positions like the football hold or the cradle hold. The luna lullaby Bosom Baby pillow is soft enough that it didn't hurt my incision. I could have it pressed right up against my body and it still did not hurt. I tried the other nursing pillows after I received the luna lullaby to see if maybe the reason the luna lullaby Bosom Baby pillow did not hurt was because my incision was healing. All of the other pillows still hurt and were still uncomfortable. I could not find a comfortable position with the other nursing pillows that would allow me to nurse Bunny for the entire nursing session.  (At this time Bunny was still nursing for about 30 mins per nursing session.)

The luna lullaby Bosom Baby pillow was the only nursing pillow that was comfortable and supportive. I have had it, and used it multiple times per day, for a year now. It has not lost its shape. Most nursing pillows lose their shape after time. The luna lullaby Bosom Baby pillow is still as plump now as it was when I first received it. I even shoved it in a bag and took it on an airplane with me. I was not willing to travel without my favorite nursing pillow! 

The luna lullaby Bosom Baby pillow I purchased has a pink minky dot cover. It is SUPER soft. The cover comes off so you can wash it. There are no zippers, it folds over on the end. I really like this because there are no hard zippers or edges to rub up against Bunny. It is available in many different colors and patterns, and you can order extra covers!

I love this pillow so much I bought 2 more. I use one in Bunny's nursery, one in our family room, and one is at my families house. I also purchased the travel pillow to use when we were going to travel. When I received it, I was disappointed by its size. It is VERY small. The travel pillow looks like a child's toy nursing pillow. I did end up using the travel pillow on our first airplane ride. It was a nice size for the airplane. I could use the travel pillow while I was sitting in my seat on the airplane and it did not encroach on My Love's space in his seat. If I had used the full size luna lullaby Bosom Baby nursing pillow, I would have taken up some seating space of the person next to me, possibly on both sides. Once we arrived at our destination, the travel pillow was useless. I could not fit all of Bunny on the pillow (she was 12 weeks old). I did not pack my full size pillow for this trip, I was assuming the travel pillow would be sufficient. I ended up using the travel pillow as well as other pillows and blankets to help support Bunny. The travel pillow was not supportive enough. On our second plane ride, I simply used an extra blanket under Bunny. It did the same thing the travel pillow did. The travel pillow was handy, but not worth it for the price. It now sits unused in our closet. Once Bunny is older she can use it for her baby dolls. 


 I highly recommend the luna lullaby Bosom Baby nursing pillow to every expectant mom and to every nursing mom out there. I can not sing it's praises enough. You really HAVE to try this pillow! I have heard this is a great pregnancy pillow as well. I will have to try it as a pregnancy pillow with the next baby!
